(by Francesco Capra - traslated by Simone "Sigi")

An important member of the Cross and Harriers running community: Gabriele De Nard

Today we will know a little bit better one of the best runner of Cross and Harriers, that runs well on the track, like his personal witness. 13'34" in the 5k, and 28'58" in the 10k. We are speaking about the 32 years old Gabriele De Nard, running for the Fiamme Gialle Club. We had the pleasure to know him at the recent Cross della Volpe di Volpiato (TO) and now he kindly accepted to give us an interview.

Q: Hi Gabriele. Could you tell us when and why you started to run?
A: I started at the first year of my secondary school, I was 11 years old, running in Cross Country (Corsa Campestre) onrganized by the School and by the Italian Army (Esercito Italiano), then I continued with non competitive, sunday races.

Q: What are your first relevant results?
A: In Meltina, I became Italian Champion for Mountain running, when I was in the category of Allievo

Q: Why you did quit with mountain running?
A: Because I was under the army in the Army's Sports Center, where my current trainer notice me, Andrea Bartoli. He did hire me for the Fiamme Gialle team. From that time I did stop to do mountain running.

Q: What do you remember about your 3rd place and the Juniores World Championships of Mountain Running in Gap, 1993?
A: A very nice memory. I was a boy. But you know that important results are at senior level.

Q: Which feeling you have running?
A: Serenity, Freedom.

Q: Where do you usually train? Who are your training partners?
A: During Summer I go in Livigno, then in Predazzo, hosted by the Alpin School owned by Guardia di Finanza. During winter I stay 15 days in the barracks, in Ostia and 10 days at home. My usual training fellows are Giovanni Gualdi, Salvatore Vicenti, Luigi La Bella, Luca Batoli, Dario Milanesi, Federica Dal Ri, Sabrina Varrone.

Q: How is your relationship with your trainer Andrea Bartoli, who trains your team-mate Giovanni Gualdi, winner last sunday in Volpiano?
A: Very good, I owe him a lot, like I said before he wanted me in the Fiamme Gialle team. Then with a lot of work and sacrifices he did bring me to this level. I will never stop to thank him.

Q: How is your typical week of training? How many km do you run? What are the "works" you prefer? The one you hate?
A: During winter I run 180-190km per week, and when I feel good I like all the trainings; on the opposite when I have problems even slow running is tough.

Q: What is the race you prefer? Mountain Running, the track, street running or Cross? Which of them gave you the better satisfactions?
A: I like cross very much, and street running in the evening-night, very nice. I did pretty well in the track as well, but I took my best satisfactions from Cross.

Q: Is there a race that you remember with special satidfaction? and one you would like to forget about?
A: I remember with special pleasure the Cross European Championship in Thun, Swiss, where I was fourth, just 1 second from the podium, and my first Italian Cross title, I won this year in Lanciano. The worste was the Cross European Championships in Medulin, what a delusion.

Q: What are your personal best on the track? Have you ran an half-marathon yet? Have you ever thought about the marathon?
A: 3'43"55 for the 1500mt, 7'48"99 for the 3000mt, 13'34"19 for the 5000, 28'58" for the 10000, 1h03'45" for the half-marathon, this year in the Roma Ostia. If all goes well I should debut in the Rome Marathon, next spring.

Q: In which kind of race, do you think you can obtain the better improvements?
A: In the half-marathon, I ran only three of them up to now.

Q: What are your ambitions for the next Cross European Championships? Do you think that our National Team can win the European Title?
A: I hope to do a nice race giving a nice score to the team to try to be on the podium.

Q: What are your objectives for the 2006/2007 season?
A: Do a nice run at the European Championships and the debut in the Marathon.

Q: What is your secret dream?
A: Like all the other athlete, be part of the Olympics!!!
